Lefty Bones is a junk peddler by trade. Detritus, bric-a-brac, heirlooms and bygone personal effects are Bones’ currency. Cuts Like a Charm is his decade-in-the-making debut album, and a product of bided time. Armageddon holdouts, harvested from tunes both old and new. He’s broken them in; living with them as is, and retooling them throughout the experience of losing his mother to Alzheimer’s, then following his heart strings cross country to a new life in wait. For that, Cuts Like a Charm couldn’t have come before now.

Even bad seeds flourish and flower—for Bones this took shape in home recordings from his new California roost, armed with loose-pocket-change chords and a Rhythm Ace drum machine. These 11 songs unfold like his own devil at the crossroads: before, during, and after. It’s a cosmic take on pick-up-and-go blues, in a spirit akin to J.J Cale and J Spaceman stargazing from a suburban roadside escape room for ghosts.

Minimal in nature: organ, synth and single-drum accompaniments dress-up Bones’ skeletal arrangements with earworm dimensions. Astral boogies and low-key balladry permeate the album, but each cut’s not without its own charm. Sharp post-production work by Mean Jeans’ Christian Blunda, and vocal accompaniment from Warm Drag’s Vashti Windish (on “Sparks” and “Sweet Love”) give Bones’ homespun aural treasures a lustere that welcomes you in, so before long you'll want to stay.
